Recreation Therapist

iCare Home health is an innovative agency offering a variety of one-to-one home healthcare services including Friend, Personal Support and Nurse at Home. We leverage therapeutic art and recreational therapy to enrich the lives of people in the community and helps them deal with depression, self esteem, anger management among other personal challenges that they may suffer from.

Recreational Therapist Job Summary: 

This is 1:1 service that is usually held at the client’s home with the option to leverage community resources wherever possible.

Recreational Therapist Respnsibilities:

  • Provide one to one therapeutic recreation interventions for clients suffering from any or combination of ADHD, Autism, Anger Management, Mental Health issues and self expression challenges.
  • Complete assessments, establish goals and set up milestones leading to achieving a successful result based on the assessed needs, evaluate.
  • Adjust programs to evolving needs and/or abilities as a result of the care provided.
  • Fill in proper documentation as required.
  • Develop a positive professional working relationship with facility staff and client family members.

Documentation

  • Documentation is done online using our leading edge Health Espresso platform.
  • Complete session progress notes thoroughly and with attention to deadlines

Recreational Therapist Qualifications:

  • A diploma/degree in Therapeutic Recreation
  • Documented experience working with dementia and mental health challenges.
  • Experience dealing with Autism is an asset.
  • 1 year knowledge of and documented experience with therapeutic recreation assessment techniques, establishing treatment plans, program development, implementation, documentation and evaluation.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Compassionate, optimistic, patient and caring nature.
  • Valid driver’s licence and reliable vehicle is mandatory for this client.
  • Police Criminal Reference Check.
  • Special Needs children Care training and experience is an asset.
  • Current certificate in standard first aid and CPR.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Must be physically and mentally fit to handle the demands of care giving.

The Companion is a “Friend at Home” front line position acting as a representative of iCare Home Health and providing the services offered by the company. The Companion duties are not limited to those listed as the position has a wide scope of duties at times dependent on the client and always under the auspices of the company. The Companion will mostly work independently of co-workers or supervisors and therefore must balance good judgement and initiative along with the policies of the company. The Companion will be required to maintain a safe working environment for themselves and their clients. It should be noted that emphasis is for the Companion to involve the client in the care program to help provide the client with the basic standards of healthy living as follows:

  • Companionship

    One of the most important aspects of iCare Home Health will be providing clients with a strong sense of self-esteem and independence. Taking a genuine interest in the client, their life and their environment will help create a true sense of companionship. Whether it is playing a favourite board game or card game, reading, taking a stroll or visiting with friends and neighbours, companionship provides the depth of our services.

  • Housekeeping, Laundry, and Pet Care

    The Companion will provide dusting, washing hardwood and flooring, vacuuming carpets and furniture, changing bedding, scrubbing the bathroom; pre-washing, washing, drying, ironing and folding laundry; defrosting refrigerators/freezers; cleaning ovens/stoves and china cabinets; caring for house plants; taking out garbage and general tidying of living spaces as required or requested. It may also include caring for pets including grooming, feeding, exercising, walking, playing, cleaning up after the pet.

  • Kitchen Work

    Grocery shopping, preparing menus and meals, cooking, baking, serving, assisting with eating, washing and drying dishes and general tidying up is included.

  • Transportation and Escort

    A Companion may drive their car and transport a client to an appointment or errand if the Companion has written authorization from the company to do so. The Companion may also escort the client to appointments or errands providing a helping hand or shoulder to lean on.

Qualifications:

It also includes reminding the client to take their prescription medications.

  • Companionship

The RPN and RN duties are not limited to those listed as the position has a wide scope of duties at times dependent on the client and always under the auspices of the company. The RPN is for client care with less complex needs – clients with stable and predictable conditions. The RN is for client care with more complex needs in unpredictable situations. Both the RPN and RN will mostly work independently of co-workers or supervisors and therefore must balance good judgment and initiative along with the policies of the company. It is the responsibility of the RPN and RN, to perform routine treatments and services in the delivery of care to the clients. It should be noted that emphasis is to involve the client in the care program to help provide the client with the basic standards of healthy living as follows:

  • Controls, prepares, and administer treatments and medications with knowledge of the purpose and adverse effects of the nursing care provided.
  • Functions as a knowledgeable and supportive member to maintain high levels of health care.
  • Complete all documentation for assessments, observations, planning evaluation, orders by physicians and care provided to clients.
  • Utilize professional assessment skills to identify the physical, mental, and psychosocial needs of clients, patients and is able to develop a care plan to meet these needs in a multi-disciplinary approach.
  • Responsible for changing dressings.
  • Functions in a supervisory capacity as assigned for the completion of a client and patients care, and maintenance of a positive environment.
  • Functions as a team member, resource person and mentor to peer and subordinates to maintain professional nursing standards.
  • Acts on clients behalf to assure patient rights and is aware of areas that make clients subject to abuse and prevents such abuse.

The RPN would work by providing foot care services for our clients. Service would be provided to clients in their own homes, in retirement homes or in long-term care facilities. The RPN will mostly work independently of co-workers or supervisors and therefore must balance good judgment and initiative along with the policies of the company. It is the responsibility of the RPN, to perform routine treatments and services in the delivery of care to the clients.
