How to not Wither in this Weather. A Guide to Keeping Warm for Seniors

With the warm summer heat way behind us, many of you would be thinking about reaching to the central heating switch sooner than you would have thought. Severely cold conditions are not just uncomfortable, but also dangerous. During such spells, it is essentially important that the seniors are taken care of and protected from frostbite and hypothermia, which sometimes can be fatal.

Hypothermia is a medical condition where our body cannot generate enough heat to keep itself warm. It occurs when our body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature. Inadequate clothing and being over exposed to this chill can result in such a condition. Children and the elderly are particularly susceptible to these bitterly cold weather conditions and hence fall an easy prey to these medical infirmities.

How to beat the cold?

There are several ways to help the elderly cope with such weather. It is essential to bundle up and wear several thin layers, which is better than one thick layer of clothing. Also, it is very important to keep active and moving about as much as possible. Traditional hot meals and plenty of hot drinks will help you keep warmer inside. Making sure that we are warm and cozy when we go to sleep goes a long way in protecting us from this chill. In cases of power outages, having emergency heating equipment and fuel can be extremely helpful. Keeping the head covered is of supreme importance as most of the body heat is lost from the top of our heads.

During cold spells, an elderly person maybe too frail to light a fire, cook a hot meal or even move. As a society, we should all step in and make sure that we work towards the safety of our senior citizens. Having a friend or assistant can be beneficial at this time, but if you do not have a friend or family member, worry not. This is where we step in. iCare Home Health is the leader in senior care in GTA. Our caregivers will take care of you with the same love and affection like your loved ones would have.

A promisethis Christmas!

Christmas is the time of the year when our friends and family come together but for many elderly people, this is the time that they feel the most alone. With plummeting temperatures and fresh falls of snow, the sense of isolation for many elder people only increases. So, at this time of the year, let’s try to spread the holiday cheer and provide companionship and care to those who would welcome our company the most.

And so at this time of the year, and with the escalating chill, stay warm and let’s not forget those who would welcome our company the most.
