How to Stay Healthy Through Cold & Flu Season

Its that time of year again. We are spending more time indoors, windows are closed, germs are spread and before we know it, our healthy bodies are ridden with viral infections. Our immune systems get weak and….we get sick! How can we take a holistic approach to staying healthy this winter? Its all about keeping our immune system strong. Some simple tips seniors and home healthcare providers should know:

How to Stay Healthy Through Cold & Flu Season

Take a multi-strain probiotic

Be sure to take an enteric coated probiotic daily with a minimum of 10 – 15 billion bacterial count. Probiotics are “friendly bacteria” that fight the invading “bad bacteria” in our intestinal tract. It’s the bad bacteria that weakens our immune system and allows us to get sick. Note: Overuse of antibiotics will deplete the good intestinal flora also. Did you know that your immune system is developed in your intestinal tract? Keep it healthy with friendly, good bacteria and it will reward you by keeping the bad guys at bay!

Vitamin C

up to 2000 mg daily – to reduce inflammation and keep cells healthy; best food sources are citrus, berries, kiwi, bell peppers, dark leafy greens such as kale, broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts

Take a good quality multi-vitamin daily

these are best purchased at a health store as some drug store brands contain fillers and inferior quality vitamins.

Avoid refined sugar

not only does it deplete your immune system, it feeds cancer, and hinders Vitamin C absorption

Consume plenty of colorful fruits, vegetables & leafy greens daily

these contain vitamins & antioxidants which not only boost our immune system but help to fight free radicals (more “bad guys”).

Wash hands often with soap & water

go easy on the antibacterial gels as they strip the hands of the good bacteria we need to stay healthy.

Get proper sleep

sleep is essential for maintaining a healthy immune system

Drink plenty of water

not only will water help to flush out bad bacteria, it keeps the nasal passages moist to fight off infections. Add fresh lemon wedges for added vitamin C benefits.

Get some form of exercise daily

if you can’t get out for a walk, do gentle stretching, or practice yoga or tai chi

If you do manage to contract a cold or flu:

Increase consumption of probiotics

again, these guys fight off invaders, so up the ante!

Oregano oil

strong tasting, but it works! take a few drops in room temperature water several times daily – best taken straight under the tongue if you can

Zinc

helps cells resist infections, aids in tissue repair and shortens the duration of colds – food sources include beef, shellfish, nuts & seeds, beans and eggs Drink lots of water to keep the body hydrated & flush out bad bacteria Change your toothbrush when you have recovered. Often people get recurring colds and this is because you are recycling the germs that are now on your toothbrush!
