How to Promote Social Bonding for a Person with Dementia

Social activities have many benefits that include maintaining good health, happiness, and well-being. However, these activities may be difficult for those with dementia. These individuals often have high anxiety, confusion, changes in behaviour, and limited confidence.

The positive benefits of social activity make it a key component of dementia care. If a loved one in your family has dementia, here are a few ways you can promote social bonding.

Choose Positive Activities

Dementia patients, like anyone else, will be more likely to engage in activities they enjoy. You can make it a positive experience by choosing a social activity that you both appreciate. When you’re both enjoying your time together, you’ll create a positive experience for both you and your loved one.

Work Around their Schedule

Many dementia caregivers will find that their clients perform better at certain times of the day. “Sundowning” is common among dementia patients; it refers to feeling confused late in the day. Take advantage of morning or afternoon activities instead. Dementia patients will be more likely to enjoy social activities when they’re feeling their best and most alert.

Keep it Simple

Too many distractions can be confusing and stressful for dementia patients. If you’re trying to play a card game with the radio or TV playing in the background, this may impair their focus. Similarly, a coffee date in a busy café may be noisy and tense. Keep activities simple when it comes to dementia care. Speak in slow, simple sentences and engage in only one activity at a time.

Have a Purpose

You can help maintain a dementia patient’s independence with purposeful activities. Social bonding doesn’t always need to take place in a restaurant or park. Try sharing simple household tasks together such as folding laundry. This can help the patient to feel purposeful while you bond.
