Preventing Senior Falls
As we grow older, our bodies aren’t as strong as they used to be. It’s a fact that as human beings we don’t want to recognize our loss of strength because it means we’re getting old. The fact is we’re going to get old no matter what. As we get older we are more susceptible to falling and hurting ourselves. The highest cause of injury for people 65 and older is falling. One in three seniors will fall every year and of the ones that fall, 30 percent will fall again within the next six months.
This isn’t comforting to know, but it doesn’t mean that there is nothing we can do about it. There are many ways to prevent falls from happening.
Exercise Regularly
Try exercises that will increase leg strength, improve balance and increase flexibility.
Review your medications
Look over medications with the doctor or pharmacist. Find alternatives to medications that cause dizziness or drowsiness.
Floors
Use double sided tape to keep furniture and rugs in one place and from sliding around. Remember to move furniture out of the way that could cause a fall.
Kitchen, Bathroom and Bedroom
Try to keep often used items in lower, easy to reach cupboards. Install non-slip mats or grab bars in the shower or tub. Have floor lighting put in to light the way to the restroom at nighttime. Choose slippers with non-slip soles to avoid slipping.
Alarm
Invest in a personal emergency alarm/ device just in case you fall. That way you have help on the way quicker.
Keep your vision sharp
Seniors should have their eyes checked every year. They should wear glasses or contacts with the right prescription to make sure they can see things clearly.
