Senior Foot Care: Listing out the Common Foot Problems in the Elderly

Foot issues are common among seniors. There are many types of pain, stiffness and sores that affect the feet. Seniors with diabetes may have added complications as they start to lose feeling in their feet. This can make it difficult to find out about foot issues without daily monitoring.

That’s why foot care for seniors is based on awareness. Discovering and preventing issues in the early stages is critical to prevent future problems. Below are some of the most common foot issues that seniors should be aware of.

  1. Diabetic foot care: Circulation in the feet can be affected by diabetes. This can make it difficult for existing blisters or sores on the feet to heal. Diabetics may also find that the feeling in their feet is affected. Without this, it can be hard to become aware of an issue in the early stages.
  2. Arthritis: This can cause painful, swollen feet, making it difficult to walk and move around without help.
  3. Bunions: Bony growths or misaligned bones may cause bunions. This may result in the big toe pointing crookedly towards the second toe and may be painful.
  4. Toenail issues: Thick toenails, discoloured nails, fungus, and ingrown toenails are common with older adults. Without senior foot care, the elderly may find it hard to reach their toes and provide proper trimming of the nails.
  5. Corns and calluses: These are patches of thick, yellow skin that have lost moisture and oil due to age.
  6. Hammertoes: This occurs when toe joints curl up or curl under. It can cause a painful and dislocated joint in the foot.
