Why Diabetic Foot Care Education is Important

Why do so few Oakville diabetics know that there are special diabetic foot care needs? It could be because adjusting to an illness such as diabetes can be a challenge, especially as we age. Things that we used to take for granted, such as when we should eat, become a concern. Diabetics need to get used to monitoring their sugar levels and the other tasks that come with diabetes. Most are too overwhelmed to realize that their feet also need special attention.

For seniors especially, who may have lived with diabetes for years, diabetic wound care, including on the feet, is of top importance. Let’s discuss what happens to diabetic feet and why your senior may need some foot care education.

Nerves and Blood flow

Even when a diabetic does a great job of monitoring their blood sugar, its fluctuations begin to take a toll on their nerves and blood flow. A senior diabetic will typically have reduced sensation in their feet, and reduced blood flow to their feet. This means that they may not even realize when their feet are hurt.  Further, with reduced blood flow, diabetic sores on feet will take much longer to heal.

Infection Risk

Diabetics are at increased risk of infection, both on their feet and in other areas of their bodies. This is because they have injuries for longer and may not be alerted by pain to clean and protect the injury. Diabetic foot care and diabetic wound care should both focus on limiting the chance of infection and catching an infection as early as possible.

If a senior does not know that they should check on their feet daily and get the help of a professional when dealing with diabetic sores on feet, they are risking a potential infection.

Spread Awareness About Diabetic Feet Issues

Thankfully, diabetic feet care can help keep seniors with diabetes comfortable and healthy. Simple education can empower seniors to take control of their own health with regular foot cleaning and care. Plus, it’s important that seniors know when they need to reach out to get professional help. Diabetics should seek medical care for their feet anytime they have broken skin. Other seniors may need help less often but can still benefit from foot care.

If only more seniors knew that they could get professional, in-home feet care from a medical professional. In fact, those services are available in Oakville from iCare Home Health.
